Curriculum Focus Day - Thursday 11th December

Students can look forward to a busy finale to the end of term. The second Curriculum focus day on the 11th December promises to be a great day with the following themes for each year group

Year 7; ‘Eco–island’: Recycled Christmas challenge

Dress code: Non uniform (but please don’t let students come in new clothes as they may get messy!)

An inter-tutor group festive challenge which tests the skills of creativity, co operation, communication and team work as each of the tutor groups have a series of challenges to undertake. Each one is carefully designed to demonstrate confidence and capability in the design, production and presentation of a festive extravaganza!

Parents and their families are invited to celebrate the outcome of their work, with mulled wine and mince pies from 5-6pm that evening.

Year 8: Developing resilience through co-operation, communication and team work. This includes an optional visit to Kingswood Activity centre in Bembridge, team work and problem solving, orienteering at Borthwood Copse, survival cookery and camp craft.

Dress Code: Students do not need to be in uniform, please wear warm clothes as some activities are outside.

Year 9:  Healthy Body; Healthy Mind’. A themed day based around the importance of keeping healthy and active for the brain to work at its optimum. Positively Mad will be based at Sandown Bay Academy, running interactive workshops in study skills and techniques to support effective learning. Practical activities such as Karate, climbing, cheerleading, dance and martial combat compliment raising awareness of sexual health, body confidence and alcohol.

40 students also continue to develop their Sports Leadership skills, following the Sports Leaders UK Level 1 award with Mr Johnson. Many of them will spend the afternoon putting their skills to the test in the Bay cluster Primary school Sports hall athletics competition.

Dress code: PE kit (students can wear additional sports clothing over their PE kit).

Year 10; The ‘Awe and Wonder’ of Science is celebrated through a natural History museum trip to London, Dinosaur Isle, a Planetarium, science workshops. Some students may also be taking part in Performing arts workshops, facilitated by an external company.

Dress code: students should be in full academy uniform

Year 11: Across year 11, every student will be working on an aspect of their study programme which is a current priority for their GCSE/ BTEC courses. This could involve intensive revision, small group support, additional time and support to complete course work or an accelerated workshop to achieve the highest grades possible.

Dress code: smart casual

Sixth form the sixth form programme reflects the very diverse needs of this age group. Ranging from specialist university application sessions, to mastering the art of relaxation, from ‘cooking on a budget’ to catch up sociology session, each sixth former has chosen from a varied menu designed to develop opportunities for support, alongside necessary life skills.

The following day is Mufti day and our canteen are holding their Christmas lunch:

Friday 12th December

Mufti/Christmas jumper day

This is a national charity day, raising money for Save the Children.

Sandown Bay Academy will be supporting this as a whole school community -houses, school council, students, staff, everyone!

The cost to wearing a Christmas jumper/ something festive is £1.

Christmas Lunch in the canteen

Roast Turkey with stuffing, gravy, red current sauce, roast potatoes and vegetables.

Christmas pudding and vanilla custard or white chocolate mousse.

£1.75 for main

75p for desert

£2.05 for both courses


The final week sees each house celebrate the success of its students and active involvement in academy life. Each house in turn will celebrate the success of so many different people. They will also showcase the talents and entertainment within each house.
