Year 7 and 8 students were invited to attend a day out at the University of Southampton. Please see a report below from Mrs Adams:

"We visited the Lecture Theatres, Student Union, the shopping area, the Nuffield Theatre, the squash courts, climbing wall and fitness suites.

We headed back to the Chemistry building where the students donned their laboratory coats and safety glasses, had a briefing from the lead professor and started their experiments, guided by Phd students from the Chemistry Dept.

After a morning of colourful flames (different substances),  strange smells and popping explosions, the scientists stopped for lunch. We had a quick lunch and then went off to explore the library, swimming pool and court complex.

Then it was back to the lab experiments where tests were run to identify the pH of a variety of fruit and vegetables, using red cabbage as a natural indicator. Next they got involved in demonstrations showing uses of liquid nitrogen (-178C) , solid carbon dioxide and the extraordinary colour changes and gas eruptions brought about by adding acids or alkalis to the solution.

The students asked lots of questions, were fully involved and are looking forward to another university adventure!

At Red Funnel, we were greeted as regulars and caught up with 'Dancing Jim' as he enthusiastically marshalled traffic. Jim is a well known character who enjoys his work and tries to spread happiness to his colleagues and customers.

His motto is " you spend so many years working that you may as well enjoy it. It costs nothing to smile, be respectful and help improve someone's day"  We look forward to seeing Jim in SBA next week for the Y10 Careers Fair."
