Principal's Blog - Friday 11th July

Earlier this week we were lucky to have a visit from BAE and the RAF who ran a Science Roadshow for students in Years 7 and 8. The presentation was very engaging, showing exciting aspects of Physics, Maths and Engineering. The students really enjoyed the mix of humour and interesting facts. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is something that will be a real focus within the academy next year so we will see many more of these exciting events.

The achievements of Year 9 students were celebrated on Wednesday during the end of Key Stage Presentation Evening. Students were awarded for their outstanding attitudes and work during Key Stage 3. I am sure they will continue to be exemplary students as they move into Year 10 in September.

Our Year 9 Sports Leaders have been doing a sterling job again this week, running a cricket competition on Monday and The Bay Primary School’s sports day on Wednesday.

‘A huge thank you for today, your Year 9 team were amazing, polite, patient with the children and able to provide really clear instructions to everyone.  They are a real credit to you and to the school and I do hope you can convey this message to them all.’

I was delighted to see the huge number of Year 11 students return for sixth form induction this week. The sixth form team said the students were fantastic and are looking forward to welcoming them back in September.

As this blog is published over 150 students are completing their final miles of Yellow house walk to raise money for Earl Mountbatten Hospice and Children with Cancer UK. This is a great Sandown tradition and this year’s walk is the 25th anniversary. No doubt there will be some very tired legs, so well done everyone and rest up over the weekend.

Next week is a busy one, starting with the Hampshire Cup Final for our U15 cricket team. It is an outstanding feat to get to the final and I am sure they will bring home the trophy to end a fantastic year of sporting achievements at Sandown Bay Academy. Good luck boys!

We have Celebration Day to look forward to on Tuesday and another production from our excellent performing arts students. The School Council have organised a fundraising non-uniform day for Friday, please support them to ensure this day is as fruitful as the other fundraising days they have worked so hard to make a success this year.

Enjoy your weekend; I will be training hard for the Dodgeball game against House staff next Friday!
