Principal's Blog - Friday 11th March

Year 12 students had a great day at the Higher Education Fair on Wednesday, finding out about lots of different universities and courses. The majority of Year 13 students have received offers from universities, including a large number of students who have received unconditional offers because universities are so impressed with their applications.  Josh Perfect recently received 2 good offers to study dentistry; one at Queen Mary University London and the other at Newcastle University. Other offers include: Biomedical Science at Lincoln University, Law at Brunel University, Anthropology at Durham University, Aerospace Engineering at Sheffield University, Radiography at Portsmouth University, Automotive Engineering at Sussex University, Modern Languages at Nottingham University, Dance at University of East London, Physics at Birmingham University and many many more. Year 13 students will complete their finance applications next week with help from university welfare staff. A reminder that the closing date for applications to join Sixth Form in September is Friday 18thMarch.

Congratulations to the students who completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh training last weekend. The Duke of Edinburgh Award requires hard work, commitment and determination. It is a fantastic Award which builds valuable skills for work and life and helps to opens doors in the future.

On Thursday, Year 13 Performing Arts students completed their musical theatre performances for the Performing Arts Gifted and Talented students in lower school. The students really enjoyed the performances and were inspired.

We have had another successful sporting week at Sandown. The U13 girls’ football team won all of their matches in the seven-a-side tournament at Cowes Enterprise College and were crowned Isle of Wight champions. They also travelled to Southampton for the Premier League six-a-side tournament where they narrowly missed out on getting through to the final at Goodison Park. This has been an extremely successful season for our girls’ football teams; all age groups have won their respective Isle of Wight leagues as well as the 6-a-side tournaments.

Miss Walker was incredibly impressed with the Year 7 and 8 students she took to compete in the Hampshire Schools Cross Country Championships earlier this week. She said that all of the students showed great determination and were a real delight to spend the day with.

Good luck to the Indoor Rowing team who are competing at the National Indoor Rowing Championships today.

On Friday 18th March Sandown Bay Academy is fundraising for Sport Relief. Red House Council have been working hard to organise this day. Students can wear mufti if they bring in £1 and/or an item for the Isle of Wight Food Bank. The mufti should be of a sports theme or include an item of red clothing. Students can also choose to be sponsored to help raise even more funds for this good cause. This does not need to be a huge amount - every little helps. All students will either run or walk a mile throughout the day. This is an ambitious task, but I am sure we can do it.

I am looking forward to welcoming 225 new students to our Academy community on Wednesday 16th March at our Year 6 into 7 Welcome Evening.  I know our students will show true Sandown Bay spirit and give them a warm welcome as they engage with the Transition activities planned for the summer term.

Enjoy your weekend
