Principal's Blog - Friday 11th September

posted 11 Sep 2015, 05:12 by Karen Bricknell

As we come to the end of the first full week of term I have been able to see for myself some of the fantastic opportunities available to Sandown students to enhance their academic experiences of school.

Last weekend 18 students completed their assessed Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition; with all of them passing. They worked incredibly hard navigating their way across the island and setting up camp for a chilly night under the stars. Well done to all the students involved and I would encourage students to sign up for this year. The Duke of Edinburgh Award gives students the valuable skills they will gain for work and life and will help open doors for them in the future.

The first Inter house competition of the year took place on Wednesday; Year 7 football and netball. There was a great turn out and a lovely friendly, competitive spirit between the houses. Well done to Green House who won both the netball and the football.

Good luck to the Year 13 BTEC Performing Arts students who have been selected to perform at The Bestival for the fifth year in a row. They have been working really hard to perfect their performances. I look forward to hearing about how they got on.

Auditions are taking place on Tuesday and Thursday next week for our whole school musical ‘The Sound of Music,’ please encourage your children to come along and be part of this show.

I enjoyed meeting the School council this week; I am looking forward to working with them to further develop the student leadership opportunities in the Academy. I am delighted that all tutor groups now have a House Representative who will feed back ideas to the School Council.

I look forward to meeting parents from Year 7 and Year 10 next week at the first of the Parent Partnership Meetings. These events have been planned to give you an overview of the year ahead for your child and us to work together to help your child realise their potential.

Enjoy your weekend.
