It has been lovely to once again celebrate the wonderful achievements of many of our students this week during Presentation Evenings and Celebration assemblies. Students have a lot to be proud of this year and it is great to see them rewarded for their hard work and commitment.

Following interviews last week, I am delighted to announce the following appointments to our student leadership team for the academic year 2016-17:

Head Girl: Grace Addyman

Head Boy: Harry Finnis

Deputy Head Boys: Nathan Doran and Barny Thomas

Two Deputy Head Girls will be appointed in September. I look forward to working with these Sixth Form students and our school council to ensure that student voice is at the heart of decisions made at Sandown Bay Academy.

Students in the High Performance Academy were joined by Natasha Khan, ex professional tennis player this week. They had an excellent day learning a new sport ‘beach tennis’ at Yaverland beach.

There were a huge range of activities taking place in the Academy on Tuesday for the final Curriculum Focus Day of this academic year. Year 7 students took part in an inter-form rounders challenge. Year 8 students focussed on careers, money management and employability skills. Year 9 students took part in inter-house competitions and Army activities. Year 10 students had a curriculum driven day focussing on key areas of coursework and skills to support success at GCSE. Some Year 12 students went to Thorpe Park while others were guided through UCAS statements.

Students have been put through their paces in the Lake District this week during their Gold Duke of Edinburgh expedition. Congratulations for all the hard work and determination to complete this award that will open many doors in their future.

Thank you for making me feel so welcome during my first year on the island and at Sandown Bay Academy. I look forward to continuing to build on the strengths and Sandown Bay Academy and to ensure that it is the very best it can be for our incredible students.

I hope you have a restful summer.  I look forward to seeing students on GCSE and A Level results days.
