French students and staff were welcomed to the Island and to SBA this week during their stay as part of the French exchange. They came into lessons at the academy and also visited some of the island’s attractions including Carisbrooke Castle, Osbourne House and The Needles. The exchange programme has had an extremely positive impact on everyone involved I look forward to further developing the links with the school in the future.

Congratulations to SBA Global Rock students who performed in the Showcase at Portsmouth Guildhall last night. They were awarded 6 Excellence Awards:

Excellence for Drama, Excellence for Performance Skill, Excellence for Choreography, Excellence for Video Performance, Excellence for Entertainment, Excellence for Soundtrack.  I am sure you will agree, their performance was outstanding!

Although they didn’t return with any medals, the students competing in the National Rowing Championships last Friday performed very well with some impressive times (click here to view the full results). Daisy Faithfull came an impressive 13th out of 221 competitors and Annabel Dalton who is new to rowing came 68th out of 221 at her debut appearance.

Our girls’ cricket teams had a successful week with the U13 girls finishing runners up in the Indoor cricket finals and the U15 girls winning the indoor cricket semi-finals. Well done girls!

There were a wealth of activities and study support sessions taking place in the academy on Wednesday for our fourth Curriculum Focus Day. Activities included team building, careers fair, careers talks, a trip to the Higher Education Fair, sports leaders and targeted revision and support. Thank you to the many local businesses who came in to work with our students.

Human hungry hippos as part of Year 8 team building day.

There are lots of revision and support sessions on offer for Year 11 students over the Easter break (click here to view the programme); please make the most of these, these sessions will really make a difference with the exams fast approaching.

Bon Voyage to the second group of students off on the ski trip today, I am sure they will have an amazing time. I also hope that the sixth form students enjoy their History trip to Poland and Germany over the Easter holidays.

I look forward to welcoming back students after the Easter break on Tuesday 14th March. This will be the start of a very intense term during which we prepare our Year 11 and Sixth Form students for their final examination.  In addition, we will continue in our efforts to drive up standards across the academy and, as ever, we are counting on the support of every family in ensuring that every one of our students attends every day, in full uniform and prepared to work hard and learn.  These are key ingredients to success.

I will be working with the leadership team in order lay down the plans to ensure that the academy continues to improve next year. In April there will be further interviews in order to ensure that a top quality Principal is in place for the start of the new school year. In the meantime, I know that I can continue to count on the support of everyone here in making Sandown Bay Academy a great school.
