Principal's Blog - Friday 29th April

posted 29 Apr 2016, 05:26 by Karen Bricknell   [ updated 29 Apr 2016, 07:12 ]

We are very keen to send our students on trips to Universities so they get an insight into the wide ranges of courses available in the future. This week a group of Year 10 students who are interested in careers in medicine spent the day at Southampton University looking at transition of disease and pathology. Year 9 students visited Portsmouth University on Wednesday for an ‘Introduction to Higher Education’ day. The group came away buzzing with excitement and aspiring to attend university.

Congratulations to our Young Enterprise team who presented their project this week at the island showcase at The Quay Arts Centre; although they were not overall winners, they received recognition for their website, presentation and resilience and innovation for their project ‘Isle Eat.’ They have put in a great deal of hard work, enthusiasm and business expertise to their project and I am very proud of them.

Thank you to students for participating so enthusiastically in Blue House Mufti Day today to raise money for Isle of Wight Independent Lifeboats and the Sandown Bay Academy Hardship Fund. Well done to everyone who ‘challenged Blue House’ at lunch time today.

A group of students attended Ryde Arena today as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Diamond Tour. Our ice skating team came second and three of our students performed in the synchronised skating display. Students got the chance to meet HRH Prince Edward; he took the time to chat to them about their experiences taking part in Duke of Edinburgh.

I was delighted to attend the official opening of the revamped tennis courts today. We were selected as one of 21 schools in the country to be part of a new tennis pilot run by the Tennis Foundation and the Lawn Tennis Association. We will receive funding and support over the next three years to increase participation and enjoyment in tennis. 8 of our students have been selected to be tennis ambassadors and they have been working hard to run the pilot. Please encourage your children to come along to lunch time tennis club; it takes place every day for all year groups and also after school on a Friday.

Our Year 11 BTEC Music students presented an outstanding showcase of their musical talents at the Music concert last night. Their performances bode very well indeed for their upcoming examinations; we wish them all the very best of luck.

Our Academy Business Manager, Ms. Cooke, was incredibly impressed with a group of Year 10 Citizenship students who presented on BuildOn; a charity they wish to fundraise for. They were passionate about the charity and articulated their reasons for supporting this charity very well.

Year 11 students, please make sure you use this bank holiday weekend to revise; especially those who have English IGCSE exams next week. There are lots of useful resources on our website (click here).

Enjoy your bank holiday weekend.

Enjoy your weekend.
