Principal's Blog - Friday 4th September

Dear Parents,

I’m delighted to be here at the start of a brand new academic year in my new role as Principal at Sandown Bay Academy. Our students are to be commended for the very positive start they have made to the academic year. It has been a pleasure to meet them in assemblies this week and I look forward to completing my introductions to our Sixth Form students next week.

We had some excellent news to start the new academic year as we celebrated our students’ examination results during the last two weeks of August. Our Academy continues to go from strength to strength and I was delighted to see that progress and attainment has increased in so many areas. That students achieved so well was a testament to the incredible effort on the part of students, teachers and support staff, working in partnership with you as parents. I look forward to building on that solid foundation and working towards even greater success in the years to come.

I was incredibly impressed when I attended the Sixth Form Awards Evening last night; it was delightful to welcome back our graduates and hear about how well they are doing in so many different routes. The range and breadth was huge; including students studying Law at Queens University in Belfast, Midwifery at Surrey University, Chinese at SOAS University of London, Physics at Oxford University and Medicine at Nottingham University.

As we start a brand new year together, I would like to take the opportunity to reaffirm our high standards and expectations here at Sandown Bay. We have been speaking in assemblies and lessons with students about the importance of having a ‘growth mindset’. This means believing in their potential, making a consistent effort, being resilient in the face of adversity and always believing that they can improve through hard work. I encourage you to help them to strive towards these ideals as they progress through their learning journey here at Sandown Bay.

As your Principal, I am committed to leading our Academy to become the school of choice on the island. Our Academy will be known for being a caring, supportive place where every student can excel in their learning and enjoy the incredible opportunities we are proud to offer. Our Academy, and each and every one of our students, will be known for embodying the Sandown Bay values of respect, tolerance and diligence. When we celebrate the successes of our graduating students, we know they will be ready to embrace the rich challenges and opportunities of life with confidence.

In closing, I thank you for the very warm welcome I have received from the Sandown Bay community. We have a series of ‘Parent Partnership’ meetings scheduled for each year group over the first few weeks of term. I hope you will be able to attend and I look forward to meeting you.

Warmest wishes,

Claire Charlemagne
