Principal's Blog - Friday 8th May

posted 8 May 2015, 02:41 by Karen Bricknell

I had a wonderful evening on Wednesday celebrating the Class of 2015 at the Year 11 Presentation Evening. Teachers, House Leaders and the Senior Leadership team celebrated the fantastic achievements of so many of our students. Thank you to Kim Buckland MBE who was an inspirational guest speaker on the evening.

SBA’s first Literary Festival this week was a great success. It was lovely to see students experiencing the work of a diverse range of authors; developing their interest in literature and writing throughout the week.  ‘Adisa’ a performance poet visited the academy on Tuesday and gave an engaging talk to Year 9 students; he also delivered a poetry workshop with Year 10 students.

Over 50 students entered the 'Talk the Talk' competition on Wednesday as part of Spoken Language Day, congratulations to Imogen Hawkins, the overall winner who gave a powerful talk about anxiety and panic attacks. Niall Powell and Kyle Boakes won the Year 7 prize, Jamie Durrant-Dore won the Year 8 prize and Ottilie Richardson and Poppy Goad won the Year 9 prize. Congratulations to everyone who took part; it is not easy to stand up in the lecture theatre in front of your peers and adult judges and deliver a speech.

Jon Robinson, author, came in on Thursday to speak to Year 7 students. There was a lunch on the lawn where students joined Jon to talk about his writing career and their favourite writers. 30 students (7L1) also enjoyed a creative writing workshop with Jon.

On Friday Year 8 students enjoyed workshops from a Theatre Company on Shakespeare.

All through the week literary lunches were enjoyed on the library lawn -or inside due to the weather.

Our cricket teams are looking promising for a successful season; the U15 cricket team won their first match of the season, defeating rivals CTK by 44 runs.

Enjoy your weekend
