Medrox

Advice, Ambition, Aspiration
AAA at A Levels will be your passport to top universities in the country

MED – Medicine and medical related
(e.g.  medicine, veterinary, dentistry)
R – Russell Group Universities
(including other top institutions)

OX – Oxford and Cambridge Universities

Our focus group is called Medrox, it is a group to support students who are aiming high. Every year Medrox students progress to the most competitive courses. Being part of this group enables them to achieve some very attractive offers from the best universities in the UK.

A recent study has shown that half of schools in Britain failed to send a single pupil to study medicine at university over a 3 year period (The Times, December 2014). We placed two students at Medical School in 2014. Edie started her training at Nottingham University and Jamie started his at Southampton University.

Since the formation of the Medrox group in 2008:

·         10 Sandown students have progressed to Oxford

·          8 Sandown students have progressed to Cambridge

·         4 Sandown students have progressed to St Andrews University

·         14 Sandown students have progressed to Medical School, Veterinary School or Dentistry School

Careers are being launched in fields such as Law, Business Management, Biochemistry, Engineering, Diagnostic Radiography, Paramedicine, Physiotherapy and many other fields.

Gifted and Talented students also benefit from Medrox activities and receive additional attention. This year’s Medrox group has thrived with many Years 12s taking advantage of places gained at competitive summer schools. This has been complemented by a range of visits to lectures at universities and the visits of former students who come in to talk to the group about their experience at university.

We offer great strength and experience through the Performing Arts department and sixth form students have a strong record of progression to Professional Training courses at Conservatoires, Dance and Drama Schools.

‘Medrox opened doors to many opportunities at universities including residentials, open days and taster courses I otherwise would not have known about. It has helped inform my decision about which course and universities I am applying for. My highlight was spending six days at St Andrews University studying Physics and Maths.’
Daisy Blake, Year 13

‘Medrox has given me an insight into a whole range of academic possibilities which I would not have found on my own. It is a group which is unique to sixth form and has provided me with direction and ambition and it helped secure my decision to study at Sandown Sixth Form.  My highlight was studying Law for a week at Villiers Park.’
Will Ford, Year 13

‘I am currently in my first year studying Medicine at the University of Nottingham and loving it! I really enjoyed my time at SBA sixth form and had good academic support throughout, whilst also appreciating the more relaxed atmosphere with teachers. There were numerous opportunities to get involved in extra-curricular activities such as a mock law trial and to take on leadership roles within a team. I particularly valued the guidance given by MEDROX during the process of applying to university. Not only was I able to broaden the contents of my personal statement through attending relevant events, but was also fortunate enough to be able to partake in a mock interview which was invaluable.’

Edie Swain, ex-student who is studying Medicine at the University of Nottingham

‘The Medrox group really opened the door to a range of opportunities that supported my application to Oxford University. Whilst in sixth form I attended a Physics Summer School at Oxford University, a residential week studying Astrophysics at Cambridge University and many more things that I would not have found out about had I not been part of the Medrox group.’

Jordan Strobach-Morris, ex-student who is currently studying Physics and Philosophy at Oxford University
